There’s a lot to like about Arlington Heights. Few U.S. towns boast horse racing, alfresco dining and miles of bike trails. There’s a nice community vibe. Thanks to our numerous festivals and events, there’s never a dull moment.
If there’s one thing that could ruin your experience of this great place to live and work, it’s pain. That’s where we come in.
If you’re seeking pain relief, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 50 million Americans, including children, are treated in a chiropractic office every year.
We address subluxations, which are areas in the spine that aren’t functioning properly and cause nerve aggravation. This improper nerve function leads to problems elsewhere in the body. Depending on where those nerves go to in the body, there are many conditions that chiropractic might help. Many patients have reported good outcomes with these issues:
Some of our patients have fallen, been in a car accident, had a sports injury or overexerted. However, the most common reasons that patients experience pain or symptoms are; sitting all day and performing small repetitive motions in their daily lives.
In other words, our daily lives put a tremendous amount of stress on our bodies. And when our bodies cannot adapt, pain and symptoms appear. We opened our chiropractic clinic to offer hurting people conservative, all-natural treatment, but not all patients have pain issues. Sleigh Family Chiropractic is also a general wellness center.
The word “chiropractic” derives from two Greek words loosely translated as “done by hand.” It was coined by Daniel David Palmer, who performed the first spinal adjustment — the centerpiece of chiropractic care — in 1895. He went on to establish Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest institution in the field. Our own doctors studied and trained there.
Chiropractic focuses on the spine and other joints and their relationship to the nervous system. If something goes wrong anywhere along your spine, your overall health can suffer. Tissues and even certain organs could be affected.
That’s why many of our clients don’t wait to have an injury or experience pain before scheduling routine appointments. Much of our work is preventative care. In fact, preventative care is one of the fastest-growing specialties of chiropractic.
The purpose of the spinal adjustment is to relieve pain and restore function and mobility. A successful adjustment reduces inflammation, relieves pressure on the joints and improves nerve function. Some patients report that other health issues improve after an adjustment as well.
In a chiropractic adjustment, controlled force is applied to a joint or joints. Doctors typically use either their hands or a special hand-held tool, but there are around 100 techniques used around the world.
The reason for there being so many is that every patient is unique. Chiropractors don’t treat isolated symptoms; they consider the whole person. Indeed, chiropractic is one of the most holistic types of health care. Don’t be surprised if your doctor makes recommendations about diet, exercise, sleep and other aspects of overall good health.
Your comprehensive care might also include massage, light intersegmental traction, electrical stimulation, heat and ice treatment, low level laser, spinal manipulation, stretches, and exercises and other therapies. We’ll tweak your plan now and then as results dictate.
More and more people are choosing chiropractic care for its safety and effectiveness. It’s hardly considered alternative treatment anymore. In 2017, the American College of Physicians began recommending chiropractic over drug therapy for lower back pain.
We’ve all seen that prescription painkillers are far more addictive and dangerous than anyone thought. Back or neck surgery is much riskier than chiropractic’s noninvasive approach.
Also, chiropractic is often more affordable than traditional health care, and many insurance companies cover it.
Patients with back problems give chiropractic high marks. According to the 2011 Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center, patients found it more effective than all other back pain treatments. Those included prescription drugs, over-the-counter remedies, yoga, Pilates and deep-tissue massage.
Of course, there’s certainly a place for conventional care. Our doctors often collaborate with other professional providers and communicate as needed with patients’ other doctors.
Chiropractic is a wonderful complement to other types of care, but rest assured: If your condition requires attention from someone with a different expertise, we’ll make the referral.
