The 12 Days of Health and Wellness: Day 3, Keep Your Feet Pain Free

Feet Pain Free

The holidays mean lots of running around for many people. This can put a lot of stress on the feet and possibly lead to increased back pain. Before making the trip to the mall, grocery store, or neighborhood caroling, make sure that you have the right pair of shoes. Many sacrifice comfort for fashion when choosing shoes, but the body often suffers for days from this. Taking care of your feet this holiday season can decrease foot and back pain.

Here are some tips to avoid and relieve foot pain during the holidays:

  • Match the shoe to the activity. If you are going to be out walking a lot, choose a comfortable walking shoe. It may not be the most fashionable choice, but your feet and back will thank you.
  • Make sure that your shoes fit properly. Have your feet measured when you go to buy new shoes. The balls of your feet should be right at the part of the shoe that bends when you are walking.
  • Choose shoes with plenty of cushioning and support. Many women buy flat shoes rather than heels because they are better for the back and feet. However, many flat shoes don’t have any support in them and commonly lead to discomfort. Also, for men, be sure to choose dress shoes that have some support in them.
  • Shop for shoes at the end of the day or after a workout when your feet are the largest. This will prevent purchasing shoes that are too small.
  • When you try on shoes, there should be an index finger width between your toes and the shoe. Make sure that the toe box doesn’t feel too tight. If it does, you may want to try another brand or look for wider sizes. The heel of the shoe should fit snugly and not slide when you are walking. Walk around for a few minutes with both shoes on to make sure that they are comfortable

Many times problems and imbalances in the feet can lead to problems and pain in the pelvis and the spine. Most people alter the way they walk when they are wearing uncomfortable, painful shoes. Limping or favoring one side more than the other leads to imbalances in the pelvis and spine which then leads to pain. Women’s high heeled shoes cause an increase in the curve in the low back. This can jam the joints in the low back and lead to pain.
