Chiropractic for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time. But it can also be an uncomfortable time. At Sleigh Family Chiropractic, we understand the joy and anticipation you may be experiencing—along with the aches and pains that may make you feel miserable.

Our chiropractors are not only parents but also Dr. Katie has special certification in pregnancy chiropractic through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. What’s more, our staff is friendly, caring, and empathetic.

Aches and Pains of Pregnancy

Among other changes during pregnancy, normal weight gain increases the demand and fatigue on the muscles and ligaments of your spine and pelvis.

Not surprising, pregnancy also causes your center of gravity to shift, forcing you to compensate with improper posture.

In addition, preexisting and often times unnoticed problems may be aggravated during pregnancy. This can lead to even greater pain and discomfort.

If you’re like many women, you’ve experienced some of these aches and pains during your pregnancy:

These stresses on your body can impact your growing baby and your labor and delivery. Additionally, these symptoms may interrupt your sleep. However, you don’t have to be uncomfortable for nine months. Chiropractic during pregnancy can provide relief.

“More often than not, women feel they just have to deal with the pain and discomfort of pregnancy. That it’s just part of being pregnant. They are told they can take Tylenol to help with the pain. If that doesn’t work, or if the mother wants to avoid medication, she has to just put up with it. This doesn’t have to be the case.”

Prenatal Chiropractic Care Results

Chiropractic care for moms-to-be can help to alleviate much of the stress on your (and your baby’s) body. But more important, chiropractic care for expectant mothers helps ensure your baby has space for proper development.

Here’s what we typically see at Sleigh Family Chiropractic after chiropractic care for pregnancy.

"Many women report that they have significantly less pain after treatment and that they sleep better at night."

How Chiropractic for Pregnancy Works

During pregnancy your body goes through many changes. Hormones cause your joints and soft tissues to relax, but this can also lead to misalignment and pain.

The birth canal is made up of the two pelvic bones that meet to form your pelvis. As your baby grows, it puts increased stress on the joints of your pelvis. This stress can lead to pelvic misalignment, changes in the shape of the birth canal and imbalances in the ligaments that support the uterus.

In turn, this can affect the position of your baby and lead to transverse (crosswise), breech (buttocks or feet first), or posterior (facing “backwards” toward your stomach) positioning of the baby.

Specific Chiropractic Adjustment Used in Pregnancy: Webster Technique

Dr. Katie is specially trained in the Webster technique, which she uses to restore pelvic alignment and balance. By realigning the pelvis, sacrum, and ligaments that support the uterus with gentle and specific chiropractic movements, many women avoid common pregnancy aches and pains  as well as encourage baby to get into the optimal vertex (head down) position. The Webster technique has been shown to reduce constraint to the mother's uterus 82% of the time, allowing the baby to get into the vertex position for birth.

Pregnancy Exercises and Stretches

During pregnancy, it is very important to tone and gently stretch the muscles and prepare for labor and delivery. Drs. Quintin and Katie Sleigh of Sleigh Family Chiropractic in Arlington Heights customize exercises and stretches for patients that come into the office depending on their condition.

Pregnancy Exercises: Stretches

Daily stretching will help your womb and pelvis be more aligned for the baby. In addition, these balancing activities may make your childbirth easier.

These daily exercises promote anterior positioning of your child, which in turn is the best and most comfortable position for the baby and for you!

These activities will not make a head down baby turn back to breech nor will they make an anterior baby turn posterior.

Start your daily pregnancy exercises early in your pregnancy. Do not wait until late pregnancy to "see" if the baby ends up in a "malposition" before beginning.

These activities can be done at any time, even before pregnancy!  Why wait when balance enhances physiology?
