Ease Back Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time of anticipation. Whether you and your partner are looking forward to welcoming your first child, or to expanding your family with an addition, it’s a joyous wait.

That doesn’t mean it’s all roses for the expectant mama. Along with the glow, pregnancy can bring a host of discomforts. One of the most common of these is back pain. Even women who have never before experienced back pain can find that they’re struggling, especially once they hit the halfway mark in pregnancy.

Back pain in pregnancy often occurs where the pelvis and spine meet at the sacroiliac joint. The reasons for an increase in pregnancy-related back pain can include:

Weight gain

Doctors recommend that women starting pregnancy at a healthy weight gain approximately 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. That weight, especially because it’s concentrated in a woman’s abdomen, puts stress on a woman’s spine. That stress can cause back pain.

Posture changes

Even if the expectant mother doesn’t necessarily notice it, pregnancy can cause posture changes as she adjusts to carrying additional weight. Those posture changes can put more stress on the lower back.

Hormonal changes

The hormone relaxin has an effect on a pregnant woman’s entire body, relaxing the joints and ligaments during pregnancy in anticipation of the baby’s birth. The ligaments of the back can experience this effect, too.

Stress Pregnancy

Stress Pregnancy is a joyous time, but also a time of uncertainty. Many people experience back spasms or clenching during times of stress. That’s common for pregnancy, too. International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, the Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment intended to create balance in a woman’s pelvis. This balance is considered optimal for ideal fetal positioning before birth. With about 4% of all full-term babies presenting as breech (or feet-first position, rather than head-first), the Webster Technique offers an option to these patients to encourage their babies to turn before labor begins. The Webster Technique, when administered properly, has about an 80% success rate in encouraging babies to turn to a head-down presentation. The Webster Technique is most successful when performed sooner rather than later. The doctors suggest that women contact the office as soon as they find out their baby is in the breech position.
